How to Become Temple Grandin

It took me a lot of years to find my happy place and become successful with autism. When I was first diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder I really didn’t know much about autism. I knew that there was the autism spectrum and then there was Temple Grandin. You see back in the 1980’s autism was not nearly as well-known as it is now.

In fact, there was autism and then there was Temple Grandin. If you are a parent of a child who was just recently diagnosed with autism then it is likely that you are not very familiar with the many types of different people that are out there on the autism spectrum. One of the first people you will likely come across in your research of what it is like to have autism is Temple Grandin.

Temple Grandin is the most famous person with autism who is alive today. She has been extremely successful at everything that she does because she has worked very hard to get a lot of very good interventions but don’t let her fool you. You see, your child’s autism services will not look anything like Temple’s autism services unless your family is a millionaire already. Insurance companies aren’t in the business of providing Temple Grandin like autism services to anyone with autism because they just do not understand autism and insurance companies do not understand what it is like to live with autism.

In fact, Temple recommends 20 to 25 hours per week of intensive therapeutic intervention for someone with autism but there are very few insurance companies who would agree with her on the number of hours per week someone with social skills coaching really needs. It can be hard for people with autism to overcome a lot of social things but if they receive an intensive amount of intervention it will be much easier for your child with autism to be able to get the right treatments and get what they need.
